Apple Digital ID - How to set up, how to use and Availability

hi everyone, Apple finally launched its apple digital id and it was something that apple showed off with ios 15 many months ago now it's finally available on your phone in supported areas now.

What is the Requirement for Apple Digital ID?

I want to talk about the requirements as far as the phones and devices, the states and countries that support it, what it looks like to set it up, and how it would be used.

How To Use Apple Digital ID?

now the first thing is how you would use it this would take the place of your physical id so instead of carrying around a card what you would do is walk up to kay ask tap it on it and then verify.

it's you similar to face id or touch id and then you're good to go through that checkpoint.

if that's available so in the available areas it will also be available at the TSA Apple says it will be at TSA checkpoints or those are security checkpoints in the united states for airports and checking the signage for availability is what apple currently says.

if they have that option you can just use your phone or your apple watch the same exact way to go through those checkpoints so apple has made that available on both devices.

if you do want to use it on your device though you will need to have an iPhone 8 or later running ios 15.4 Update so you will need the latest update where that code is there so you can use the apple digital id.

also, you can use that along with your watch but it needs to be a series 4 apple watch or later running watch os 8.4 or later, so if you have 8.4 or 8.5 now you can use it on the apple watch as well now it's currently supported in just one area in Arizona in the united states.

Apple Digital ID Availability?

so right now it's available in Arizona and other states later so according to apple it's going to be included in colorado, Hawaii, Mississippi, Ohio, and territories such as Puerto Rico and then also Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah.

so it will be available in all of those states but as far as country support it's hard to say as well Canada, the UK, Australia, Germany those will probably be later on but the country or the state has to provide a support network on the back end to handle all of this as well, so they have to work directly with Apple to get this set up so it could take some time around the world now.

How does Apple Digital ID Work and how to set up apple digital id?

the way this works is you first need to go into your apple wallet so we'll go into the wallet within your apple wallet tap on the plus in the upper right once you've pressed the plus button you'll see that it says driver's license or state id so we can now add that to our wallet tap on driver's license or state id and we currently only have one option for Arizona, so Arizona's driver's license we have that option and then we can hit continue in the future we should have the options for local states and countries as well hit continue and it wants you to scan the front of your id now if you see if it actually sees an id that's not from Arizona it will tell you that it's not supported so it actually recognizes where it's from and recognizes the layout of the Arizona ID.

now apple has shown what this looks like though so if you haven't seen it and you're in Arizona it looks like shown above in the image where you would scan the front of your id then you scan the back of your id then you scan your face similar to face id or if you have touch id it's supported there as well but it's going to scan your face to make sure it matches your id then it's going to send it to the local database in the state or country where it gets approved.

so again you'll see where it says to send to Arizona MVD and they handle that they approve it then it's available in your wallet after it's approved so again the state needs to have the local backend to handle all of this as well to verify the id with the database.

so it's a legal id on your phone so that is how that works and again it will be available in the future but at many checkpoints and things maybe around the world or in your country or state I would imagine this will be added later on and maybe we'll see this from other manufacturers such as android.

right now this is super secure it has all of the depth mappings and more or the face id to scan that or your touch id and you're verifying it a different way so that's something they've announced today that's available.

When Apple Digital ID is going to available?

they haven't said when it will be available in other states such as maybe Florida or new york or California those are yet to be in the future and other countries as well in addition to apple using digital wallet Apple has also updated the car key feature which now supports more vehicles the 2022 genesis and key vehicles.

so if you have that option for your vehicle you can now add it to your phone and use it with your wallet where you would just tap your phone to use it so that's something they've added with the ios 15.4 updates.

so there are going to be more and more but right now what's supported is the gv60 g90 and the key Niro.

so those should be supported hopefully we'll see more of that added in the future with things like tesla and more so maybe shortly but right now digital id is finally here and that basically completes everything apple wanted to add to ios 15 that they showed at WWDC.

we'll have to wait and see what they do with ios 16 next to where they'll add additional features but we'll see that in the next few months with the following release usually around September but digital id's finally here let me know what you think about it.
